Above The Fold Update – Google’s Major Rollout for 2012

Google has recently rolled out a new algorithmic update affecting a vast majority of the sites in losing their SEO visibility, its called as “above the fold” update, not sure if its the project name. But it looks like this is the first Panda for 2012.

Matt cutts was giving a hint to webmasters last year about a possible change that could affect sites with too much of ads above the fold, making readers find difficult to search for contents, its finally rolled out now.

So if your site started to see decline in SEO traffic after 1/22/12 to a major extent then it could be possible that you have too much ads above the fold? verify using the tool here

This change would only affect sites with lower user interaction, the bounce rate and pages per visit in your analytics are the obvious data for this.. Less than 70% bounce rate and more than 2 pages per visit? then I think you will not be affected much. And also the time visitor spends on your site, the more the better, anything more than 1 minute is a good sign. Less than 30 seconds?  Go to the drawing board…

Matt Cutts about the “above the fold” update

Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away. So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience. Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.

We understand that placing ads above-the-fold is quite common for many websites; these ads often perform well and help publishers monetize online content. This algorithmic change does not affect sites who place ads above-the-fold to a normal degree, but affects sites that go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree or that make it hard to find the actual original content on the page. This new algorithmic improvement tends to impact sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above-the-fold or relevant content is persistently pushed down by large blocks of ads.

Another Google engineer Chris Richardson says:
“It’s not a numbers game. Google hasn’t written their algorithm to punish sites with, say, 20 ads above the fold, as opposed to the site owner who only has 19 showing. No, from the Cutts/Google perspective, the algorithm alteration inspects pages to see how the space, especially above the fold, is being used.

Tips on How to recover from the lost SERP rankings:

1. Remove the ads above the fold for sometime until your site improves back to its positions or improve the bounce rate.
2. Instead of having one big ad, try to have few smaller ads. Don’t make ads the center of your website, do not think of CTR of the ads, CTR cant be compromised with SERP rankings.
3. Serve relevant ads
4. Move from thin affiliate site to a content driven site.

I’ve put in my thoughts on different Google penalties on websites that prevents sites ranking high in SERPs for the keyword they target for.

1. Google Sandbox:
Sandbox is an highly debated greay area which Google has not officially accepted about its existance. But sanbox makes perfect sense and hence they do exist. Every new website tend to be in Google sandbox for a particular period of time, this can be seen by a sudden dip in search traffic for a particular period of time. The period of time varies depending on the niche, your keyword competetion, your domain quality, content quality etc 

Some points to note about Sandboxing:

• If you are in a competitive niche, your website is almost sure to be sandboxed, it is kind of a test Google tries to judge a real quality website and sites solely intended to making money through free traffic.
• If your domain is 100% EMD then your sandbox duration may be slightly lesser.
• If you keep adding new content and build backlinks graaaadually, then your website is sure to rise in SERP sooner.
• MFA (made for adsense) sites are prone to sandboxing easily, so do not add adsense or any sort of ads to a brand new site, wait for some time for its rank to settle in search engines. It also gives adsense a better chance to deliver more targeted ads with high CPC.
• After the honeymoon period (soon after new website is created, it receives good search rankings) sites tend to show a dip, this can be overcome by constantly adding content and selectively adding backlinks.

2. Google Slap:
This happens mostly with thin affiliate sites, where the quality of content is low, backed with heavy backlinks and SEO techniques. Here teh webmaster typically an internet marketer concentrates only on seo and not on content. These sites offer less to no value to users. Website can come up in SERPs after google slap but it will take time and effort.

Some of the actitivies that can recover your site form Google slap:

• Reducing the ads and affiliate links (removing them temporarily during thiss period)
• Adding more content and improve visitor experience
• Reducing bounce rate greatly
• Doing above methods for a consistent period of time.

3. Websites Deindexed:
This is the worst case, where your site has possibly involved in blackhat seo techniques anything from sneaky seo tricky or spammy link building profile, once the website is de inxed from Google it is pronounced dead literally. Move on to next website, it is a very rare case but if it happens, the site deserves the deindexation.

When Comparing two sites have same quality content, banklink profile and everything same, the one with EMD will rank better the other, thats the power of EMD.

If you already have a established brand domain name, its a wise idea to buy EMD and forward it to your establised websites.

Do not dream that EMD alone can rank your website, but EMD can push your ranking significantly to top results if it has supportive content. So while searching for a domain name, your priority is to hunt for all possible EMD related to your keywords to get the best results of your SEO.
